Distance Counseling

In the past, all counseling was done face-to-face. However, with the advent and growth of technology and the internet, people are now able to connect in other ways. Time, distance, handicaps, and other circumstances sometimes do not allow people to travel to therapy appointments. Some clients actually prefer to receive counseling in other technology-assisted formats such as the telephone or internet. Another reason to seek distance counseling is that I offer therapeutic modalities which may not be offered in your area.

My preference is always to meet clients in my office if possible. However, I am distance-certified as a counselor, and have met the professional standards required for this credential. If you feel you are a candidate for distance counseling, please express this during our first discussion. We will discuss whether or not this option is best for you. Distance counseling is not appropriate for people who are emotionally unstable, or with psychiatric disorders. I may require that you establish a relationship with a therapist in your local area, should you have an emergency, or need assistance during electrical outages when technology-assisted sessions are unavailable. I often cooperate with other counselors, and will ask that you sign a form allowing for us to exchange pertinent information to facilitate your treatment.

Although I take measures to see that our communications are as safe as they can be at my end, it is important that you be aware that privacy cannot be 100% guaranteed. At your end, please see that you have privacy and that any others who may be at your location respect that. Also, please use only private email. It is inappropriate to use work email for personal use, and your privacy is at risk. Cell phones are to be avoided, as well, because of their potential to have your privacy compromised. I use Skype appointments to work with clients, especially international clients. It is free, and easy to use.

In most cases, you will call me at the appointed time. If you live in the U.S. and do not have unlimited long distance, please tell me. Distance counseling sessions must be paid within 24 hours of the session, using options on my payment page.
